Learn more Urgent Student Relief Fund The entire University of Hawai‘i System has transitioned to a virtual learning environment through the remainder of the academic year and upcoming summer sessions. Many of our students are experiencing extreme distress and disruption in their finances, housing and studies – in lost wages; changes in access to transportation, living arrangements or childcare; and access to technology to continue their learning. Support Students Research To Saves Lives UH researchers at the John A. Burns School of Medicine are at the forefront of medical research focused on infectious diseases. They are working fervently to detect, prevent and cure COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. They have expanded their development of heat-stable vaccines for emerging viruses to include coronaviruses, in hopes of producing a COVID-19 vaccine. UH researchers are also developing processes for rapid screening and surveillance of COVID-19 in the islands and abroad. I feel dislocated, staying on couches, very transient and with a lot of stress. There is no clarity around when I can return to China to complete my degree, so I don't know if I should look for a place here. More About Bruce Great Grandmother Needs Urgent Relief Going to school at Windward Community College before COVID-19 was challenging enough. Lynette Santos, a 57-year-old grandmother, had a home bursting at the seams and had already dealt with tragedy in her close-knit ʻohana. More About Lynette More stories What the community has to say "The effects of COVID-19 have increased financial strain for many in our state, including Hawai‘i’s student population. Our hope is that this contribution to the University of Hawai‘i Urgent Relief Fund will help many UH students remain in school and persist on the path toward their academic goals." Micah Kāne CEO and president at Hawai‘i Community Foundation "As we all navigate unprecedented challenges and uncertainty during this time, UH students face some of the toughest financial struggles to continue their studies and make ends meet. By joining the coalition of funders supporting the UH Urgent Student Relief Fund, we hope that students will have their financial needs met so they can focus on pursuing their career goals." Jennifer Nguyen Director of Postsecondary Success at the Stupski Foundation "These students are our future alumni; we feel it is our duty to support as much as we can through our gift to the UH Urgent Student Relief Fund. Our hope is that this will inspire others in our community to recognize and support the needs of our students too.” Jill Hasegawa President, University of Hawaiʻi Alumni Association "Helping others by sharing what we have is an old and deep tradition in our community. We must support UH students around our state in this moment. They are our future scientists, public sector leaders and educators, and they will be the ones who move our state forward. We will get through this challenge the way Hawaiʻi always has: by taking care of each other." Terry George Harold K.L. Castle Foundation President and CEO "As a national social impact organization dedicated to helping all students build more purposeful pathways to and from postsecondary education and into rewarding careers, we know supporting students during this time of crisis is key. By helping UH students survive the economic fallout of this pandemic, they will be better positioned to continue their academic journeys and complete their education." William D. “Bill” Hansen Strada Education Network President and CEO Make a Gift New Rule For Itemized Deductions Did you know the recently passed stimulus bill – the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act - provides new allowances for donors to deduct their gifts to public charities against their 2020 adjusted gross income? It also relaxes existing limits on itemized deductions, including gifts to public charities. To learn more, consult your financial advisor or the Congressional record of the CARES Act .
